The Internet Can't Decide If This Is A Picture Of A Beach Or A Door
shanemyersphoto/Fotolia; @rebeccareilly__/Twitter
When someone says "look," and shows you some weird thing, you may see something completely different than others viewing the same object. Case in point, people on Twitter are hashing out whether a post by @rebeccareilly__ is a picture that shows a beach or a door. The internet can't decide, and according to a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience, it's because of the way the human brain processes sensory information. So whether you see a beach or a door in this tweet — without knowing what it really is — is largely subjective. At first glance, the photo looks like a landscape shot of beach turned vertical.
However, it could also be a super trendy door. Kind of like the kind Alice falls through in Alice in Wonderland. It could also just lead to someone's house because painting doors is not an obscure thing that only happens after consuming a bunch of edibles. @rebeccareilly__ posted a survey with her tweet, and 54 percent of respondents chose door versus beach. People feel pretty strongly about their decisions on both sides of the door-beach divide, and it's setting off the biggest online argument since that whole Yanny and Laurel debate earlier this summer.
According to the study, "top-down signals from association areas aid in context-dependent perception of visual scenes by altering the response properties of individual neurons." What's more, what you see depends on associations your brain makes with your previous experiences. So, if you spend a lot of time at the beach, clearly this is a photo of the beach. But, if you live in an area full of colorful doors — like Morocco — how can it be anything other than a door? Check out these tweets before you decide. You're probably going to change your mind eleventy-million times, and then you're going to need a nap.
1
A Perfect Illusion
Who knew that such a simple question could inspire such a debate? I see both a beach and a door depending on the context of the photo.
2
I Mean, It's Clearly A Door
This could legit be a door to any yoga studio in Los Angeles.
3
Some People Want To Kill The Door Dream
With so little to believe in these days, there's no harm in letting people believe this is a door. However, some people are determined to prove the door people wrong by sharing their expertise and pesky Photoshop facts. Hey, blow up the picture, lay it over a door, and it's a door. Just sayin'.
4
It's Whatever You Want It To Be
OK, if you really think about it, everything can be anything. When you were a kid you likely used household items for other things. Like, pillows and blankets aren't actually forts. But, if that's what you want them to be, they're totally forts. Confused yet?
5
Especially If There's Alcohol Involved
I think this person meant to say "door" instead of "bar." However, if you're looking at this photo at the bar, with enough tequila it could be Lady Gaga's latest red-carpet dress.
6
If You Weren't Confused Enough ...
Beach people, this might make you change your minds. This is obviously a door. While many people are arguing that no one would have a blue and green door, Google images says otherwise. Clearly people think colorful doors are cool AF. And, Google knows everything, so the door people are the clear winners here.
7
Everyone Is Right
Hey, there's enough to disagree about in 2018. Let's not let this whole door-beach debate divide us further. The picture is whatever you want it to be. If you think it's a door, open it up and walk on through. If it couldn't be anything other than a beach, go for a swim. The bottom line? Everything can be anything so everyone is right. Case closed.
Do you notice a nasty smell emitting from your drain? The causes are varied, and solutions range from a quick fix to an emergency callout. Whether your drain stinks of egg, urine, sewers or fish – this guide will cover some of the most common reasons for a smelly drain. It is also important to note, sometimes the odour can come from somewhere else other than a drain, and these causes will also be addressed in this guide.
A CCTV drain survey can easily diagnose the problem by delving deep into the drain system and rooting out the cause.
Why does my drain smell of egg or sulphur?
If a less-than-pleasant egg or sulphur smell is coming from your drain, this could be caused by an unused drain, contaminated drain or water, a lack of a trap, or a clogged vent.
An Unused Drain: Perhaps you have been away on holiday and not used your drainage system in a while? This can cause drainage water in the trap (a bent part of the pipe that seals against gases entering your home) to evaporate, destroying the seal effect and causing gases to travel back into the building. Simply turning the tap on and letting the water run for a minute, or flushing a toilet, can be a quick fix for this.
No Trap: It could be that you have no trap at all. This is a structural issue, and one that a plumber will need to resolve.
Clogged Vent: An obstruction in a plumbing vent can cause smells to creep back into your building. In the future, placing screens over your vents can bypass this issue.
Your Pipes Need Disinfecting: Hair, skin and other debris can build up in pipework, emitting an odour. Sometimes, all it takes is a thorough disinfection of the affected pipe to solve the problem.
Contaminated Water: Smelly water may be a result of the water source itself, which could have become contaminated by drain parts.
Why does my drain smell of sewage?
Sewage smells are extremely unpleasant and can be caused by broken toilet seals, dry traps, cracked drain elements or a clogged vent system.
Broken Toilet Seal: Check around your toilet, including near the u-bend. Any damage to the toilet seals could be allowing these pungent smells to escape into your property.
Dry, Missing or Ineffective Trap: All drains have a trap to stop sewer gas from entering a property. If this trap is dry, it is unable to perform its duty, so a simple mend consists of pouring water into the drain. If this does not work, your trap may be damaged or ineffective. An expert drain survey can confirm this for you.
Debris in Inner Chamber: This tip mostly applies to kitchen sinks, often which have an inner chamber. It is here that debris can collect, so clear this area and notice if the smell subsides.
Sewer Gas Leak: Whether it is cracked pipes or traps, or loose fittings, sewer gas leaks are bad news. Narrowing down their origin can be tricky, and may benefit from a comprehensive drain survey delivered by trained engineers.
A Blocked Vent: The blame could lie with your vent system. If this becomes clogged then smells cannot escape outside, and instead will build-up within the property.
Why does my drain smell of urine?
If a drain is emitting a strong urine smell, then a faulty toilet seal or mould problem could be the reason.
Faulty Toilet Seal: Every toilet should have an effective seal ring. Should this be faulty or missing, this could result in the lingering urine smell. This should be fixed by a quick call to a plumber.
Mould: One culprit could be mould, in or around the bathroom area. The mould could potentially be hidden underneath wall tiles or lino, so check these out-of-sight areas, too.
Why does my drain smell of fish?
If your kitchen or bathroom is reeking of fish, despite the lack of fish in that area, this could be an indication of a sewer gas leak, poor water quality or an electrical fault.
Sewer Gas: The location of the sewer gas could be varied e.g. a neglected drain, or the venting system. A professional surveyor can root out the problem, and identify the area of your plumbing system where the sewer gases are emanating from.
An Electrical Fault: The scent may actually not be coming from a water source, as suspected. A described 'fishy' smell could actually be the plastic of electric wires overheating. If suspected, this should be dealt with immediately. Electrical fires could mean destruction and injury, so bring in a professional to check out your home electrics.
Poor Water Quality: If the scent transpires to be neither of the above options, the issue could lie with the quality of your water. Take this up with your local water company who should be dealing with concerns of this nature – they may test your water quality for you.
Don't ignore a smelly drain – a specialist CCTV drain survey can help diagnose drainage problems by taking a look at what's going on in the pipework. Here at Express Drainage Surveys, we cater for both domestic and commercial clients, using the latest technologies to deliver drainage surveys to accurately identify issues. 7 Things to Consider When Planning a Basement Bathroom
Most–if not all–basement remodeling projects include the addition of a bathroom. Even if your remodel plans are only modest, a small bathroom or half bathroom would be welcomed by guests and family members alike.
Finishing a basement requires consideration of many important details, especially when a new bathroom will be part of the added living space.
1. Type of Bathroom
A full or three-quarter bathroom should be considered a necessity if you plan to use your basement as a guest room, family bedroom, or living suite. A full-sized installation requires approximately 60 square feet of floor space, while a half-bath or small bathroom will come in at about 30 square feet.
The latter would be ideal if you plan to create basement rec room or entertainment center without sleeping facilities.
2. Plumbing and Electrical
When finishing a basement, efficient use of space proves critical, which implies that the bathroom be located as close to existing plumbing and electrical lines as possible. Directly below an existing upstairs bathroom is ideal, that will keep costs down and make things easier on your contractors.
Ventilation considerations cannot be overlooked, so regardless of where you choose to locate the bathroom it must be close enough to an exterior wall to allow for outdoor venting.
Before embarking upon a basement remodel project, check with local building authorities to find out more about zoning ordinances and deed restrictions. This is especially important if you plan to add a bathroom.
3. Bathroom Design
Do you want:
A bathtub, shower, neither or both?
A full-sized shower with tile walls, or a prefabricated shower stall?
A pedestal sink, or a vanity with sink, countertop, mirror, drawers and cabinets?
A regular flush toilet, or a specialized toilet to ease concerns about drainage?
Possibilities here include:
A pressure-assisted toilet.
An up-flush toilet.
A sewage-ejector system.
A composting toilet.
Economic considerations, availability of space, and frequency of use will guide choices in these areas.
4. Flooring
Flooring options abound for a finished basement, but there are two types of flooring that should be avoided for use in a bathroom: solid hardwood, and laminate with a fiberboard core. Both are highly vulnerable to warping and buckling in the presence of excessive moisture.
5. Lighting
Recessed ceiling fixtures are ideal for showers, tubs, and directly over toilets. On vanities vertical fixtures mounted on each side of the mirror offer a higher quality of illumination, and track lighting is always a solid choice as well. Brightness of bathroom lighting is an individual choice, and adding a dimmer is always an option if different users have varying preferences.
If you prefer a remodel with style and luxury in mind consider installing a bathroom chandelier, which is both elegant and practical–always a winning combination.
6. Fixtures
Bath fixtures range from sink, toilet, and faucets to tub, shower heads, vanity, towel racks and shelves, depending on the scope of the project. Naturally, you should pay some attention to color and style coordination, and if anyone in the family has mobility issues or other disabilities choose options that are safe and user-friendly.
You may either splurge or choose a spartan approach, depending on your functional and aesthetic requirements. Your contractor and design team may have suggestions, and check out these sources for inspiration right here.
7. Storage Space
A linen closet offers convenient storage of paper products, towels, washcloths, clothes and so on, and could make a sensible addition if the basement bathroom will be used daily (and nightly).
Including a linen closet would make the bathroom project larger. But many people (including you?) prefer to go all out when finishing a basement, to make the final result as attractive and luxurious as possible.

Your small kitchen will gain valuable space when you downsize appliances and squeeze extra storage out of unused areas.
Here are the ingredients for additional space that won't cost more than a fraction of the $35,000 that the "Remodeling Impact Report" from the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® says you could spend upgrading your kitchen.
Hang 'em High.
Put wire racks on the wall above your sink, add S-hooks, and hang cooking utensils. It'll free up a drawer or two. The backsplash area -- the wall area right above the sink and countertops -- is often underutilized and a great place for easy-to-clean, stainless steel racks and shelves. Cost: $50 to $200.
Nooks and Crannies.
Bare walls above a phone nook or cabinets, and underneath windows, beg for storage. Make use of that open space above your cabinets with store-bought shelves and brackets painted to match the cabinets. Cost: Less than $200.
For a built-in look, build a soffit above the shelves. Cost: Less than $2,000.
A freestanding window seat stores rarely used kitchen gadgets and provides additional seating. Cost: $200 to $500.
Cool It Already.
Do you really need a behemoth 36-inch-wide refrigerator that looks like an entertainment center? Downsize to an 18-cubic-foot refrigerator. If your refrigerator stands at the end of your cabinets, as most do, downsizing could save a foot of space -- enough for shelving to store dishes, canned goods, and supplies. Cost: Less than $500.
Don't need much room for perishables in your small kitchen? Try an under-the-counter 5.7-cubic-foot fridge. Cost: $1,200.
Nuke the Clutter.
Get the microwave off the counter and into a drawer. Cost: Less than $800.
Pull-outs.
Cutting boards that hide inside your cabinets do double-duty as small kitchen tables or a bill-paying station. Caution: It's tough to add these to existing cabinets. Consider them as a custom add-on when ordering new cabinets. Cost: $300 or less, plus the cabinets.
Some custom cabinets offer a "drawer" that actually hides a 36-inch extension table. Cost: About $1,000.
Borrow Some Space.
Pantries are easy to create from a nearby closet using shelves and roll-out wire bins from a home improvement center. Cost: $200 to $500.
For a fancier solution, architect Sarah Susanka of "Not So Big House" suggests using store-bought shelving units and building them into a hallway space. Cost for a 10-foot hallway: $5,000 to $7,500.

I love commercials and am not embarrassed to admit it. This isn't only because my livelihood depends on advertising—I truly enjoy seeing a well-produced commercial or ad. In fact, if the Philadelphia Eagles aren't in the Super Bowl (and they rarely are), I get more excited about the commercials than about the game.
The other day I saw a terrific ad. A husband and wife are together, and a friend calls asking the man to come over because he needs to "vent." His wife is so touched by this sentimental outreach that she lets him go. Unbeknownst to her, venting means sharing a Coors Light with his buddy using Coors's newly designed can.
Very funny, but it also got me thinking about the positions we hold and our inability to vent from time to time because of where we sit. We can't vent upwards because our peer executives don't want to hear it, and we can't vent to our team because that would be poor judgment and leadership. So who can we vent to?
Well, I am inviting you over to vent. Why don't I start:
Budget planning: Can't stand it, and it never goes as planned. There's got to be a better way.
Product names that don't mean a thing to the common man.
Air travel: Has it really come to this?
Airline security: Do you feel more secure?
Golf: Why can't we hit a stationary object straight?
Vendors and golf: Do they really think that a golf invitation is the only way to get our time or attention?
The economy: We can't control it, so let's just adjust to what it is giving us.
IT complexity: Vendors make a ton of money off it. Do you think they really want to give us something that isn't complex?
Apple's iPhone: Now it is our responsibility to support whatever the end user purchases?
Gen Y: Yes, you're smart, intelligent, driven and technologically astute, but could you wait three months before asking for your next promotion?
Tell your spouse you'll be home soon; we have more venting to do. Send me your best vent. The winner will get free admittance to our upcoming CIO Year Ahead Conference, Nov. 9-11, 2008.
